Chronic Illness and consistently preparing healthy and nutritious meals can, at times, feel like an unachievable goal. How do you manage to do all the peeling, cutting, cooking, portioning, and storing of meals without causing an energy crash. Are there enough spoons in your day to do everything?
Preparation and planning, two key concepts that will aid you in managing your spoons when it comes to organising meal prep. Be realistic about your objectives – it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of thinking we can do more than we can. A good day can be deceptive, we’re feeling good, we have spoons to work with, so we start. But, then our chronic illness kicks the door in and we find ourselves crashing in a heap because we’ve started too much. We’ve run out of spoons to do it all. There’s potential food wastage, and the whole thing makes us feel like crap.
Don’t do it.
If there’s a cheat, a hack, a shortcut that can make your life easier, take it! Plan to prepare and succeed. Use the tools at your disposal to make the job smoother and less taxing on you. Most chefs will have a host of tools, manual or electric, that we use to cut down on energy and time spent ‘doing’ jobs. We use machines like food processors, immersion blenders, and stand mixers. However, there are options that can replicate these tools, that are less expensive to invest in, or that don’t require electricity. On the following pages we’ll look at all of these tools of kitchen trade.
